Why are Component Management Systems Important?

from: Deb St. George - WonderRanchPublishing.net

Although Content Management Systems have a strong presence in Business as well as Web development ecosystems, as the complexity of these systems is growing and user’s demands for a better, more granular content management system are raising, new ideas are being worked upon to make these systems better. Many of these ideas are still under considerations by the Gurus of the CMS industry; however, there is one CMS type that is being heavily advocated by these people and also being praised by the user communities. This rather conceptual variation of CMS systems is known as Component Content Management System. This modus operandi of such systems involve manipulating the data, that make up the content for the CMS, in a much granular way, and that is, at the level of individual components. This approach is vastly different from the traditional approach of looking at content as a set of documents. A document was considered as a unit for performing any operation. In a Component CMS, the document is also broken down into individual components that are reusable in nature. These components when used together form documents that can be used as an output medium of sense to the user.

The importance of Component CMS systems lie in the words Granularity, Reusability, Cost and Accuracy. Since the system uses data at a more granular level, management of data becomes quite easy. The contents can be kept categorized as different types of assets this database of assets can grow overtime to provide much more flexibility while creating the output documents. And all of these components organized neatly in categories can be used again and again in different combinations to produce documents that are consistent and accurate in nature. Since the components are created at once and all the modification takes place only once for each component, consistency and accuracy is preserved across all the published content using CMS. This also reduces the time it takes in creating new content as well as reduces the total cost of production of content. Cost of Delivery as well as cost of maintenance is also reduced, as for example, if the content is multilingual in nature and requires translation into many different forms, then instead of translating the same components in documents again and again, components are translated individually at a more atomic level.

So as far as manageability, effectiveness of production measures and profoundness and accuracy in delivery capabilities of an organization are concerned, Component Content Management Systems are very important from every aspect.
